These horses are hitched to a plow three-abreast. By comparison with a two horse hitch, this hitch permits horses to work longer and faster before tiring.  As these horses are hitched, the horse in the middle has two lines, one on each side of the bit.  Each outside horse has a line only on the outside of the bit while the inside of the bit is attached to a rope tied to the hame ring of the middle horse.
