Wild horses' hooves wear naturally by the surfaces they walk on. By contrast, domesticated horses must have their hooves trimmed periodically. This hoof, in very bad condition, has grown too long and started to break off. How often a horse needs its hooves trimmed varies among horses and their environment. Horses on pasture usually need less hoof trimming than horses in stalls, and horses without shoes need less trimming than shod horses.
