Description: Entodinium protozoan undergoing early stage division at the indentation in the middle of the organism. Ranging in length from 35 micrometers to 95 micrometers, they are the smallest protozoa in the rumen. They can penetrate damaged plant tissues but do not attach to plant particles as they are not cellulolytic. Their role in cellulolysis is still being debated. The mass at the left of the image is the cilia surrounding the mouth, which are used both for food gathering and for propulsion.
