Description: Niacin deficiency causes Pellagra, a pigmented symmetrical rash on skin surfaces exposed to ultraviolet light, such as the hands, feet and neck. The dermatitis around the neck is referred to as Casal's necklace, after a Spanish physician who first described the condition in the sixteenth century. Lesions can also occur on any skin exposed to ultraviolet light, such as the hands and feet. Niacin is important in metabolism as the coenzymes NAD and NADP, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and its phosphate derivative, which transfer hydrogen in energy, carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism. Niacin can be synthesized in the gut from the amino acid tryptophan but deficiency can occur in humans consuming diets high in corn (maize), which is low in both niacin and tryptophan.
