Rickets can be caused by deficiency of calcium, phosphorus, or vitamin D.  Calves can have enlarged painful joints and an arched back.  Walking is stiff legged and may be painful for the animal.  Bowed legs or knock-knees can occur if the deficiency is prolonged.  These conditions are caused by inadequate deposition of mineral into the bones.
