Description: This older horse barn is typical of some formerly used for cattle, with a low ceiling inadequate ventilation. The barn ceiling should be at least 10 - 12' high to provide adequate clearance for horses. Moist spots (arrow) on the floor originated from excessive humidity resulting in condensation on the ceiling, and possibly health issues for the horses. Properly designed barns provide airflow throughout, especially in the stalls. In an open barn with no ceiling, for example, ridge row ventilation provides good airflow to remove excess moisture as well as fecal and urine odors without creating a noticeable draft. Window fans and vents may provide an acceptable option in an older barn with a low ceiling.
