Horses should always have clean, fresh water available to them, whether they are housed in a pasture, a pen, or a stall. The average horse will drink approximately one gallon of water for every 100 pounds of body weight on a daily basis. (For example, a 1,200 pound horse will drink about 11-13 gallons of water per day.) As the animal’s activity level increases or the weather becomes hot, intake increases. Water intake also depends on the feed the horse is given. Horses on dry hay will drink more than horses on fresh pasture.
