Description: For optimal digestible protein and fiber contents and high leaf to stem ratio, alfalfa is cut for hay or haylage in the early bud stage well before blooming. Spacing of corn plants in and between rows (see image) creates a canopy of leaves to optimize capture of solar energy. Corn stalks may bare one or two ears. Larger diameter corn stalks have larger ears. Uprooted corn plants reveal root systems grow to depth and diameter of no more than about 1 foot. Smaller root systems support smaller plants and smaller ears. Like corn, soybean, wheat and cotton plants create canopies to optimize capture of solar energy. Soybean seeds are contained in pods that are broken open during combining. After wheat is combined for the seeds, the straw may be baled for animal bedding.
