Box type manure spreaders for solid manure are towed and powered by a tractor. An apron at the bottom of the spreader moves the load either to the rear (images 1 & 2) or the side (images 3 & 4) of the box where beaters spread the manure. Animal manure, usually consisting of feces, urine and bedding, is a source of nutrients for plants and improves organic matter content of the soil. Plowing or disking the soil soon after the manure is spread minimizes pollution from volatilization and/or runoff, and optimizes utilization of manure nutrients.
