This dairy barn with about 100 free stalls typified dairy farms in the northeastern United States in the 1970's. Ventilation was provided by an open ridge row and adjustable curtains on each side. Free stalls usually were bedded with sand, sawdust or wood shavings. Manure was pushed out end doors daily. Cows were fed a total mixed ration from a mixer wagon in a central drive-through feed alley. Cows on the right side could be held with locking head gates.
