Corral-type dry lots for dairy cattle typical of the southwestern United States in the 1990's. This farm had about 1,000 cows contained in corrals, each corral for about 50 cows. The corrals usually were dry because of the limited precipitation in this region. Cattle were fed a total mixed ration along a fence line, and manure was removed daily. Shade, available over the feeding areas (see NAL #3387) and elsewhere, is critical during summer months in much of this region.
