Stanchion barns were typical of the upper Midwestern United States in the 1970's. Cows arrangement with a central feed alley in a head to head configuration as depicted here was not as popular as stanchion barns with cows arranged in a tail to tail configuration with peripheral feeding alleys. The cows were milked in their stalls with a portable milking machine. The barn was insulated. Exhaust fans provided fresh air and removed moisture.
