Cows in a tie-stall barn, typical in the upper midwestern United States until the 1970's. Stalls were bedded with straw and waste was removed with a gutter cleaner. The cows were milked in their stalls with a portable milking machine. The barn was insulated. Exhaust fans provided fresh air and removed moisture.
