The ampulla is the center of the three parts of the oviduct. It is flanked by the isthmus on the uterine side and the infundibulum on the ovarian end. It is greater in diameter than the uterine end of the isthmus, but the transition in diameter of these two parts is gradual making it difficult to grossly determine the precise junction of these two sections. The ampulla plays an important role in sperm and egg transportation and is the site of fertilization.
