This calf is exhibiting signs of a vitamin D deficiency known as Rickets. Rickets is caused by low blood Ca and P levels that cause inadequate deposition of these minerals in growing bones producing weak, rubbery, cartilaginous bones, which are easily broken. The weight of the body on the rubbery long bones then causes bowed legs and knock-knees. This condition is seen in young animals. Osteomalacia is a similar condition seen in mature animals.
