The 'double muscling' in these Belgian Blue bulls is characteristic of this breed. It is caused by hypertrophy of the large (striated) muscle masses, making them appear to be double the normal size. This breed was developed in Belgium for the production of veal calves. Double muscling also is known in several other European breeds. The disadvantage is that muscular hypertrophy of term fetuses frequently leads to calving difficulties necessitating delivery by cesarean section. Furthermore, the breed tends to have small pelvises, fine-boned legs and straight hocks. Accordingly, this breed is not recommended for range cattle.
