This calf was aborted at about 6.5 months of pregnancy. About 30% of fetuses aborted due to fungal infections possess grey skin patches, mostly around the head and neck. About 60-80% of these abortions are caused by Aspergillus sp, and the others by other sp. They occur between 4 and 9 months of pregnancy (term), more often in winter. Although the route of infection is unproven, cows likely inhale or ingest the fungi. To control, avoid moldy feed. NAL #2526 and #2518 are related images.
