Three month old dwarf Hereford about 24 inches withers height, with a normal 3 month old Angus. As it is genetically controlled, since 1960 breeders have greatly reduced the incidence of dwarfism (Dyschondroplasia) by selecting against it. Dwarfism is known in most breeds of cattle, ranging in conformation from the Dexter "bulldog" calf which is invariably stillborn, to animals that are only mildly affected. This image typifies the brachycephalic type that was prevalent in Herefords in the 1960's, with short face, bulging forehead, protruding jaw, large abdomen and short legs.
