This fetus with it's extra-embryonic membranes was removed from the uterus at 80 days of pregnancy. This stripped the cotyledons (arrow) free from the uterine caruncles. The amnionic vesicle within the chorion is visible at the left side. There usually are four rows of about 15 cotyledons and the caruncles. Together, they form the placenta that carries nutrients and waste products to and from the fetus. The individual cotyledonary arteries and veins converge along the lesser curvature of the uterus to connect with the umbilical vessels. At this stage of pregancy, the fetus, cotyledons and caruncles, and the amnionic vesicle are easily palpable per rectum.
