Normal fetal membranes near term in the cow. Note the 4 rows of approximately 15 cotyledons each, and the umbilical stump and cotyledonary vessels. The cotyledons are largest nearest the fetus and the major blood supply. NAL #2085 shows the maternal caruncles that interdigitate with the cotyledons to form the placenta which transports nutrients and waste products to and from the fetus. Cotyledons range from 4 to 6 cm in diameter during the third trimester of pregnancy.
