Description: Ovaries (upper left) removed from a cow on day 17 after estrus. The left ovary contains a fully functional corpus luteum, and a follicle 12 mm in diameter. The right ovary has a follicle 17 mm in diameter. At this stage, the CL normally is fully sensitive to the luteolytic effects of prostaglandin F2a, and one of the follicles may ovulate after appropriate treatment of the cow. A cross section of the left ovary (upper right) reveals the typical color of the corpus luteum. The left ovary also is shown in an ultrasonogram (lower left). A small and the large follicle (1), corpus luteum (2), and ovarian stroma (5) are labeled in a diagram of the ultrasonogram (lower right). The ruler units are cm.
