Description: Ovaries (upper left) removed from a cow on day 15 after estrus. The left ovary contains a fully functional corpus luteum, and the right ovary has a dominant follicle. At this stage, the CL normally is fully sensitive to the luteolytic effects of prostaglandin F2a, and the follicle may ovulate after appropriate treatment of the cow. A cross section of the left ovary (upper right) reveals the typical color of the corpus luteum. A fluid-filled cyst such as that in this CL is thought to have no practical significance. The left ovary also is shown in an ultrasonogram (lower left). Two small follicles (1), the corpus luteum (3) and ovarian stroma (5) are labeled in a diagram of the ultrasonogram (lower right). The ruler units are cm.
