The left ovary has a large corpus luteum (top) and a follicle (right), while the right ovary is relatively inactive. These ovaries typify cows in midcycle (diestrus). The follicle is likely to regress in favor of another that develops rapidly in the final few days of the cycle (proestrus) before estrus.
