Description: Can dairy help solve the malnutrition crisis in developing countries? Dairy products are nutrient-dense but consumption of dairy among children is low in many low- and middle-income countries. Consumption may be low due to poverty, high dairy prices, poor access to clean water, lack of refrigeration, and/or poor nutritional knowledge. Providing dairy products to children in developing countries will likely require a multi-faceted approach. Provision of clean water will be critical as is a better understanding of the demand for liquid vs. powdered milk (despite the price difference). In these cases, industrial-scale reconstitution of powdered milk may meet the market demand at an acceptable price. Along with increasing awareness of the nutritional properties of milk, these approaches may help improve the consumption of milk, particularly among children, improving their nutrition and reducing malnutrition.
