This image shows a simple feed line at a backgrounding yard in northern Montana. The feed is placed on a gravel or stone pad in front of the pen. A plank is used to keep the feed outside of the pen. Cattle reach through between the plank and a cable to reach the feed. This type of feed line is suitable for dry, forage based diets but may not be suitable for diets which contain higher proportions of grain or high moisture feedstuffs as feed waste and shrink would be significantly greater with these type of diets under these feeding conditions.
