This photo shows gestating cows consuming swath grazed millet in south central North Dakota during the fall. Swath grazing is used to extend the grazing season when the risk of snow or ice covering the forage exists. Even under heavy snowfall conditions, cattle will be able to find and utilize the forage found in swaths. This makes this method of fall and winter grazing appealing in regions of North America where heavy snowfall can occur. The swath provides a mechanism to store the forage and maintain quality as the swath will tend to shed water and reduce the risk of nutrient loss.
