Description: This image shows the impact of a severe drought on native rangelands in south central North Dakota. The photo was taken in August following several months of below average precipitation and above average temperatures. Cattle had overgrazed this pasture and the remaining vegetation consisted of weeds. Native rangelands are resilient but drought and overgrazing can result in lowered productivity and increase the likelihood weeds and other undesirable plants will invade the landscape. Proper management in these situations calls for reducing stocking rate and allowing the plants to recover.
