Until combines became widely used, bundles of small grains such as oats, wheat and barley were shocked to dry, and then transported to be threshed at a location usually near the barn where the straw would be used for animal bedding. Based upon the size of the straw stack next to the barn partially visible over the stack, this threshing is likely nearly complete. As needed, the straw usually was carried on a fork from the stack to the location where it was needed in the barn.
