Description: Drawing of the cow reproductive tract to illustrate some details of the artificial insemination process. During insemination, the inseminator continuously monitors the location of the tip of the catheter by palpation per rectum. The insemination catheter is guided through the vagina to the cervix where its forward progress usually is halted in the fornix of the cervix. The fingers of the left hand guide the tip of the catheter centrally to the vaginal opening of the cervix. While the catheter is held steady with only minor forward pressure, the first annular ring of the cervix is pulled back over the tip of the catheter. Similarly, the 2nd and 3rd rings of the cervix are pulled back, sometimes tilting the cervix to facilitate pulling it over the catheter until the tip passes easily into the body of the uterus, the recommended site to deposit the semen. This image was taken from the video "Procedures to Artificially Inseminate Cattle" NAL #4951.
