For dry hay, to optimize retention of the nutrient rich leaves on the stems, the hay is windrowed before it has completed drying.  NAL #4863 through 4867 illustrate a variety of windrowers.  By contrast, this mower windrower and that in NAL #4861 funnel the newly cut hay into a windrow as it exits the implement.  Although this reduces the number of passes required to harvest the forage, because hay in this windrow is thicker than hay in a swath, the forage requires more drying time thereby increasing the risk of damage from precipitation.
