Description: The grass head is a forage cutter with an oscillating sickle blade and a reel/auger combination to take in the grass. A specialized tractor supplies the power for any one of several kinds of harvesting heads, thereby reducing need for several tractors. The two main components in each forage cutter head are mechanisms to a) cut the forage stems and b) take in the cut forage. The draper head (NAL #4817) has an oscillating sickle blade and a reel with tines to accommodate tall forages or cereal grains. A sickle bar head (NAL #4818) has an oscillating sickle blade and two smaller reels to accommodate short or lodged forages. Sickle bar mowers such as that in NAL #4696 predominated for decades, but declined after 2000. In the rotary disk head (NAL #4820), the cutter consists of sharp rotating disks. By attaching to other kinds of special heads, the same tractor may be used for different purposes such as harvesting grains or chopping forages. These images typify equipment used commercially in the US in 2005.
