This hay mower with a sickle bar 7.5 feet long was towed by a tractor and driven by the power take off from the tractor. The sickle bar had stationary guard plates with pointed fingers that funnelled the forage into a reciprocating sickle, and protected the sickle from stones on the soil surface. The forage stems were cut by triangular shaped sharp blades as the sickle moved back and forth through a channel through the guard plates. The height of the bar could be adjusted to accommodate the soil surface and the characteristics of the forage. The forage fell relatively flat after it was cut, facilitating drying.
