Description: These farming practices were observed near Escalante in the Basque area of north eastern Spain in May 1986. In image one, two men have been harvesting the grass with scythes. This is a difficult skill and requires that the scythe be kept sharp with a stone, as the man closer to the camera is doing in image one. In image two, a woman has raked the cut forage into piles for loading on to a horse-drawn cart, also seen in image three, for transport back to the animals (image 4) for feeding. Manual harvesting allows hilly fields to be used, as seen in images one and two, that would be difficult to harvest mechanically. Even in non-third world countries farming practices can be less mechanized than in the United States.
