Description: Farm tower silos typically vary in size from 12 to 30 feet in diameter and 20 to 80 feet in height, holding 35 to 1485 tons of forage at 35 % dry matter (65% moisture). See Minnesota Dairy Initiatives, www.ansci.umn.edu/dairy/toolbox/fs01-feedstorage.pdf, or 1994 ASAE D252.1 DEC93. They can be made from a variety of materials including wood, images 1-3, poured concrete, images 4, 5, concrete staves, images 6, 7, fiberglass, image 8, or steel (not shown). Tower silos are filled from the top by blowing chopped forage up an exterior pipe that can be seen in image 8. They usually have a top unloader that cuts silage from the top of the silage mass delivering it down an exterior chute as seen in images 3 and 5-7. This silage can be provided directly to animals via a feed auger, image 7, or can be mixed in a feed wagon with other feed ingredients to make a total mixed ration (TMR).
