In this labor efficient manure system, a chain embedded in the floor pulls the V-shaped scraper slowly along the length of the alley in the free stall barn. It may be activated when needed, or automated to work periodically. Without interrupting her feeding, this cow casually stepped over the manure scraper as it passed under her. Most systems with such scrapers move semisolid manure to the end of the alley where it is pumped to a lagoon or a tank and stored until it can be spread on a field. Alternatively, shavings or saw dust from free stalls may be added to the alley to facilitate use of a conventional manure spreader.
