Description: Potatoes are harvested before excess oversized tubers are formed. The vines must be killed approximately 21 days before harvest in order for the tubers to mature. They are then harvested using mechanical potato harvesters, consisting of blades to dig up the soil and a system of rollers and conveyor belts to remove dirt, rocks, and plant material from the potatoes. Once harvested they are separated by hand. The equipment illustrated in the top left image typifies that used commercially in the US for large scale potato harvesting in excess of 2000 acres. The top right image is harvesting potatoes on a smaller scale farm. The bottom images are of potato planting. The potatoes are kept in large bins and are fed through tubes into trenches. The large bin is removable so it can be loaded with a bucket loader right into the planter.
