Description: This mare has good conformation of the vulva. It is relatively vertical. A tipped vulva predisposes the horse to fertility problems. Feces falling onto the lips of a tipped vulva may be drawn into the vagina, and lead to uterine infection. In pregnant horses with a tipped vulva, the upper lips of the vulva may be sewn together for the duration of pregnancy (Caslick’s surgery). This reduces the chances of feces entering the reproductive tract and improves the chances for a successful pregnancy. Of course, a horse with Caslick’s surgery must have the procedure reversed before foaling.
