This zinc deficient chicken is sparcely feathered with dermatitis of the comb and wattles, and cloudy eyes. The abnormal appearance of the remaining head feathers that stick out rather than lie flat, and the thickened and rough appearance of the comb and wattles, reflect the underlying dermatitis, i.e. pathology of the skin cells, that is characteristic of a zinc deficiency (parakeratosis).
