This image shows steers wearing bags for total fecal collections during grazing studies. The bags are held on the animal with canvas harnesses and straps. The bags are typically emptied twice daily and fecal output weight is recorded and subsampled. Grazing nutritionists use this information along with forage digestibility to calculate forage intake in a grazing situation. In this image the steers are grazing dormant native rangelands in the Nebraska Sandhills following an October blizzard.
