The mucin casts are the pieces of material that look like mucous stretched through the feces. When removed from the feces and rinsed clean, they look much like sausage casings. They are evidence of damage to the large intestine, possibly due to excessive fermentation in that compartment. Mucin casts are typically associated with ruminal acidosis/dysfunction in cattle, which can result in delivery of more undigested feed to the hindgut. Mucin casts can be found in all consistencies of manure.
