In artificially inseminating a sow, the extended semen is squeezed from the plastic semen bottle through the AI catheter and deposited into the cranial part of the cervix so that the semen flows directly into the uterus. At the same time, the sow is stimulated by the technician rubbing her back and another person parades a boar in front of the sow - both thought to enhance fertility. Sows are artificially inseminated to optimize genetic progress and reduce costs for maintaining boars.
