Even where an indoor arena is not available, horses should be exercised year around. Lunging is one option for exercise, as was the case for this young Quarter horse gelding. This horse was lunging with a saddle because he was training. In addition, lunging may help calm an excitable horse before riding. Held on a lunge line, the horse is moved in a large circle around the handler, and the handler may encourage the horse with a lunge whip. NAL #3773 illustrates lunging in an arena.
